Very often when asking new clients about their corporate backup solution, we hear “we are covered” which is always great to hear.  Their data is just as important to us as it is to them.  What turns our smile into a frown is when we ask what they are using and we hear Dropbox, Microsoft SkyDrive or Google Drive.

All of those solutions are great for sharing documents with remote users or even sharing/synching your files between your smartphone, laptop and desktop.  And in the case in which your desktop’s hard drive dies (assuming you don’t have a server), it does serve as a backup solution being able to retrieve those files from the solutions cloud or your other device.

Where those solutions do NOT offer backup protection is if you overwrite the data, the file gets corrupted, or if someone else who has access to the file does something to the data, either accidentally or on purpose such as disgruntled employee.  And with there being no glandular security with the solutions mentioned above, you aren’t able to manage or protect the data as you usually would.  And if you remember the last time you needed to recover a file from backup, it wasn’t due to a failed hard drive or dead server, rather 95% of the time it was a file that someone else deleted or corrupted.

There are several cloud-based and secure backup solutions that offer the file protection and security that you should require for your business data.  Some examples would be Gillware, Mozy or even Carbonite.

So if you are using Dropbox, Microsoft SkyDrive or Google Drive as a backup solution, please give us a call and we can help.
